Turkey's Prime Minister, Bulent Ecevit, says that if the United States launches military actions against Afghanistan, those operations should continue until the ruling Taleban is ousted.
Mr. Ecevit added, however, that should such actions be taken, every effort should be made to avoid inflict suffering upon the Afghan people.
The prime minister says that the Taleban regime poses a threat not only to the former Soviet Central Asian republics, but also to Turkey because of its ties to those countries.
Mr. Ecevit also repeated his view that anti-Taleban groups in Afghanistan should be supported in their efforts to remove the Taleban from power. He was speaking to Turkish television after a Friday meeting of Turkey's National Security Council.
