Bin Laden Vows No Security in America - 2001-10-07

Accused terrorist leader Osama bin Laden is vowing there will be no security in America until the Palestinians have peace and U-S forces leave the Middle East --or as he put it " the land of Muhammad."

In a video-tape released after U-S forces began strikes in Afghanistan, Osama bin Laden praises God for the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. He says God Almighty hit the United States at its most vulnerable spot and destroyed its greatest buildings. He said America is now filled with fear and is tasting what the Islamic nation has tasted for decades. Mr. bin Laden said Muslims carried out the attack, but he did not claim responsibility himself.

The video was broadcast by Qatar-based al-Jazeera satellite television, which is widely viewed across the Middle East. Al-Jazeera received the tape at its office in Kabul. It is not clear when or where the message was recorded.

Shown with a backdrop of rugged rocks, Osama bin Laden rejects U-S assertions that its war is against terrorism and not against Islam or a specific country. He invokes God, claims he is fighting for Islam and says every Muslim must rise to defend his religion. The videotape contains similar remarks by Ayman al-Zawahiri, head of Egypt's al-Jihad group and Mr. Bin Laden's senior deputy.

Reacting to the remarks, White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said that Osama bin Laden and the Taleban have said all kinds of things that are at odds with reality. Mr. Fleischer said what Bin Laden says "is not as important as what he has done" -- a reference to the terror attacks he is accused of masterminding.
