U-S Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld says the initial aim of the air-strikes in Afghanistan is to create conditions for sustained anti-terrorist operations and a humanitarian relief effort.
Mr. Rumsfeld told reporters at the Pentagon that the immediate objective of the raids is to remove the threat of Taleban air defenses and aircraft.
Mr. Rumsfeld said the raids also target command facilities that support terrorist elements in Afghanistan and critical terrorist sites. He said the raids are continuing and the initial phase is not yet over. He said there is no information that aircraft involved in the raids were damaged.
The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Richard Myers, said the United States and Britain launched cruise missiles in the first volley of attacks.
