Accused terrorist leader Osama bin Laden is praising God for the September 11th terrorist attacks on the United States, which sparked the ongoing attack on terrorist targets in Afghanistan by the United States and Britain.
According to a video shown today (Sunday) on Al-Jazeera television, Mr. bin Laden says America is filled with fear and is tasting what much of the Arab world has tasted for decades. It was not clear when the video was made, but the independent Arab satellite channel based in Qatar says it was recorded earlier today (Sunday).
Mr. bin Laden, shown dressed in fatigues and an Afghan headdress, says God has given back to the United States what it deserves because innocent Iraqi children are being killed.
He also criticized Israel for sending tanks into Ramallah and Jenin.
Mr. bin Laden says the United States has come out to fight Islam, in the name of fighting terrorism. He called on every Muslim to support his religion.
It was the first time the Saudi-born fugitive has spoken about the September 11th attacks, openly praising them but not formally claiming responsibility.
Meanwhile, Afghanistan's Taleban ambassador in Pakistan denounced the strikes as a terrorist act. Mullah Abdul Salam Zaeef said in a statement issued in Islamabad that his country tried hard to find a solution to this problem but, he said, America has chosen the path of its power and arrogance.
Mr. Zaeef says the U-S strikes are an attack on an independent country and Afghanistan will fight to the last breath.
Meanwhile, the Associated Press quotes Pakistan's government saying it regrets that diplomatic efforts did not succeed and called for the U-S action to be "clearly targeted."
