Iranian President Mohammad Khatami says the Afghan people are the victims of that he calls a twin calamity -- being under the thumb of the Taleban and U-S air strikes against terrorist targets.
In a meeting with Canada's new ambassador to Iran Thursday, Mr. Khatami called the terrorist attacks on the United States a crime against humanity.
But he warned that the U-S military reaction could lead to a backlash on the war on terrorism.
President Khatami said the Afghan people are not only victims of what he called ignorant rulers who export hate and violence, but also of the U-S attacks.
The United States emphasizes that the air strikes are targeting suspected terrorist targets in Afghanistan -- not the Afghan people.
While Iran condemns terrorism, it says it will not be a part of any U-S led military action.
