Pakistan Released a French-Algerian Journalist Arrested in Afghanistan - 2001-10-16

Authorities in Pakistan have released a French-Algerian journalist who was arrested last week in Afghanistan.

The French Foreign Ministry announced that Aziz Zemouri, of the weekly Le Figaro Magazine, was free. Mr. Zemouri had been detained for approximately one week. He was first arrested in Afghanistan, and then turned over to Pakistan.

Meanwhile, Taleban authorities are still holding a second French reporter who has been charged with spying. Michel Peyrard, of Paris Match Magazine, was arrested last Tuesday with two Pakistanis. The independent Afghan Islamic Press says Mr. Peyrard was wearing a burqa, the full-length veil that the Taleban require women to wear in public.

The Paris Match managing editor, Olivier Royant, is quoted as saying he has had confirmation that Mr. Peyrard is in good health and is apparently being well-treated.
