Saudi Arabia Criticizes U-S Attacks in Afghanistan - 2001-10-16

Saudi Arabia's Interior Minister, Prince Nayef, says his government is unhappy with the U-S led military operation in Afghanistan.

Quoted by the official Saudi Press Agency, the minister said the Saudis wish the United States had been able to flush out the terrorists in Afghanistan without resorting to the current action.

He also said it was unclear whether any Saudi citizens were involved in the September 11th terrorist attacks in New York and Washington.

He said U-S authorities had failed to turn over significant evidence on the matter, and he questioned why investigation of the attacks has focused on Saudis or Arabs.

The interior minister denied that contributions to Saudi-backed Islamic charities fund terrorist activities. He said the Saudi authorities are certain that funds only go to those deserving support.

Meanwhile, a State Department official says Washington is in his words "very satisfied" with Saudi Arabia's cooperation in fighting terrorism. Philip Reeker also said talks ten days ago in Washington with Saudi officials about drying up the financing of suspected terrorists went well.
