President Bush says the United States is doing all it can to ensure that food aid reaches the people of Afghanistan, but will not stop its airstrikes against Taleban and terrorist targets.
(Speaking to reporters in Shanghai, China,) Mr. Bush says Taleban authorities are responsible for food assistance not reaching people who need it most. He says the Taleban seizes food, and refuses to allow proper distribution of the aid.
International agencies have requested the United States suspend attacks, so that more aid can be sent to Afghanistan. They have warned that the country faces a severe crisis, if food assistance does not reach people soon. ` Mr. Bush said the U-S military is careful to avoid disruption of aid shipments to Afghanistan, and says American planes continue to drop food packages into the country.
