Musharraf Concerned Afghan Fighting Might Continue into Ramadan - 2001-10-27

Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has warned that collateral damage caused by U-S strikes in Afghanistan and continued attacks during the upcoming Muslim holy month of Ramadan could stir dangerous unrest in the Islamic world.

In an interview with the U-S television network A-B-C, General Musharraf said he is opposed to bombing during Ramadan. The Pakistani leader said air attacks after the Muslim holy month of fasting begins on November 17th would fuel opposition to the U-S-led military campaign and give, in his words "an excuse" to intensify their protests.

General Musharaf also expressed concern for the number of civilian casualties from the campaign in Afghanistan, saying U-S strikes need to be more carefully targetted.
