The United States has accepted Italy's offer of military assistance in its war on terrorism.
The Italian Defense Ministry said in a statement that it is making available air force pilots and planes, attack helicopters and ships.
Italian Defense Minister Antonio Martino says about one-thousand men could be deployed.
However, the ministry says a final decision on Italy's role in the war would be taken by parliament, which is set to debate the issue next week.
News of the acceptance came as Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi takes part in a meeting today (Sunday) in London with leaders of Britain, France, Germany and Belgium on the latest developments in the U-S led campaign in Afghanistan.
