Pakistan : Taleban Envoy Must Observe Diplomatic Norms - 2001-11-07

Pakistan's Foreign Ministry has asked the Taleban ambassador in Islamabad to observe diplomatic norms and refrain from criticizing third countries in remarks at news conferences.

A spokesman (Aziz Ahmed Khan) says the Taleban envoy, Abdul Salam Zaeef, was summoned Tuesday and given the warning.

There has been no immediate comment from ambassador Zaeef, who is Taleban's only foreign envoy.

He has been holding daily press conferences at his residence, where he was regularly attacking U-S policy toward the Islamic regime and highlighting claims of civilian casualties in the U-S military strikes in Afghanistan.

The daily briefings had become a big media event. But the Taleban embassy held no news conference Tuesday and did not announce one for today (Wednesday).

Pakistan is the only country that maintains diplomatic relations with Afghanistan's islamic Taleban regime.
