Musharraf : Military Campaign During Ramadan Will Have Negative Fallout - 2001-11-08

Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf has again said that continuing the U-S led military campaign in Afghanistan during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan will have, in his words, "a negative fallout in the entire Muslim world."

General Musharraf made the remark to reporters in Paris today (Thursday), following meetings with French leaders.

The Pakistani General made a similar comment Wednesday during a stopover in Turkey. He said he will discuss the matter with President Bush at a meeting scheduled for later this week in New York.

U-S officials have said there is no plan to halt military operations during Ramadan, which begins in about 10 days.

In response to a question about public protests in Pakistan against the military campaign in Afghanistan, General Musharraf said he was not worried - adding that "in a population of 140-million, protests by one or two thousand people are meaningless."

Pakistani authorities have warned Islamic fundamentalist groups against violence during planned nationwide demonstrations after prayers on Friday.
