Japanese Journalist Freed in Afghanistan - 2001-11-17


Japanese media report a Japanese freelance journalist detained by the Taleban in Afghanistan last month has been freed, and wants to return home soon.

The Kyodo news agency says one of its reporters met today (Saturday) with writer Daigen Yanagida in the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad, recently taken by opposition forces.

Mr. Yanagida was arrested on October 22nd on suspicion of being a spy. The writer reportedly called a friend in Japan today, saying he was safely in the hands of the Northern Alliance.
