India Dispatched Mission to Afghanistan - 2001-11-21

India has dispatched a mission to Afghanistan for the first time since 1996. In 1996, New Delhi closed its embassy in Kabul.

A special envoy to Afghanistan is expected to spend the day (Wednesday) in the Afghan capital with other senior diplomatic officials.

The team includes a group of doctors and nurses who plan to remain in Kabul, working at a hospital named for former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

India has also posted a senior liaison officer who will remain in Afghanistan to evaluate the possibility of restoring diplomatic ties.
