Italian Journalist Killed Covering Afghanistan is Buried - 2001-11-24

An Italian journalist killed this week in Afghanistan has been buried in her hometown of Catania, Sicily.

Thousands of mourners turned out for the funeral today (Saturday) of Maria Grazia Cutuli, who was killed along with three other journalists on Monday. The group was ambushed on a road from Jalalabad to Kabul.

Afghanistan's Northern Alliance has blamed the deaths of the four journalists on Taleban fighters.

Italy reacted in shock to Ms. Cutuli's death, which came shortly after Italian troops were deployed to Afghanistan as part of the U-S - led campaign against the al-Qaida terrorists and the Taleban.

Maria Grazia Cutuli was a correspondent for the Corriere della Sera newspaper in Milan. Also killed in that ambush attack were fellow journalists Harry Burton, Azizullah Haidari, and Julio Fuentes.
