U-S First Lady Laura Bush is urging Afghan delegates in Germany to make sure they include women in a post-Taleban government, following gender repression under Taleban rule.
Mrs. Bush says the broad-based government will also have to respect human rights, including those of children and women, to ensure stability. She made the comments Tuesday in Washington as she met with 11 exiled Afghan women.
Meanwhile, the U-S House of Representatives passed legislation calling on President Bush to ensure U-S humanitarian aid in Afghanistan reaches women and girls and not just boys and men.
The measure was passed by the Senate earlier this month. It now goes to President Bush for his signature.
