U-S Bomber Crashes in Indian Ocean, Crew Rescued - 2001-12-12

A U-S Air Force B-1 bomber returning from a mission over Afghanistan has gone down in the Indian Ocean, but military officials say all four crew members have been rescued.

The cause of the crash was not immediately clear.

The U-S plane went down about 50 kilometers north of Diego Garcia -- a base being used by the U-S military in the anti-terrorism campaign in Afghanistan.

Reports say a U-S Air Force plane initially established voice contact with one of the crew members, after which a U-S navy ship picked up the four U-S airmen.

The crash was the first by a fixed wing U-S aircraft since the war began early in October.
