An American television network says hundreds of Afghan Taleban and al-Qaida fighters, including many of their leaders, have fled Afghanistan to neighboring Pakistan and Iran.

NBC News reports U-S defense officials believe that almost all of the remaining 22 top Taleban leaders have escaped into Pakistan.

The report cited unidentified U-S officials as saying that as many as 500 Taleban and al-Qaida troops captured in the northern Afghan cities of Mazar-e-Sharif and Kunduz have bought safe passage into Iran.

According to the report, most escaped on foot or horseback, including one top leader who was wounded in the fighting.
