Pentagon: No Systemic Error in Targeting Process that Killed 16 in Afghanistan - 2002-02-22

A U-S military investigation into a controversial U-S raid last month in Afghanistan concludes there were no " systemic errors" in the targeting process that killed 16 friendly Afghans.

A summary of the findings, released Friday, found that the assault north of Kandahar was based on reasonable conclusions drawn from all available intelligence -- local and otherwise -- and that it was conducted in a professional and disciplined manner.

The report said U-S forces believed that two compounds near Hazar Qadam were leadership sites for al-Qaida or senior Taleban leaders when the operation was launched on January 23rd. Later, it was determined that the compounds were controlled by friendly Afghan forces.
