Suspected Al-Qaeda and Taliban Prisoners in Kandahar Celebrate Eid - 2002-02-23

Suspected Taleban and al-Qaida fighters, held prisoner at the U-S base near the Afghan city of Kandahar, have celebrated the Eid al-Adha Muslim holiday with a feast of lamb and sweets.

Representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross slaughtered a lamb in accordance with Islamic practice and brought the prepared food to the prisoners after noon prayers today (Saturday).

Lieutenant Colonel Keith Warman, who is in charge of the detention center, said allowing the celebration is the right thing to do. He said it shows American tolerance for religions and cultures.
