Unidentified Gunmen Killed 7 Afghan Tribal Leaders - 2002-03-02

The Pakistan-based Afghan Islamic Press says unidentified gunmen have shot and killed seven Afghan tribal elders in Kunar province in eastern Afghanistan.

The news agency says the victims were ambushed late Thursday in Pashad village, 30 kilometers south of the provincial capital Asadabad.

The seven were returning from (the nearby city of) Jalalabad, where they had met with a U-N - backed commission for talks on convening a tribal assembly (Loya Jirga) to choose a representative government to replace Afghanistan's current interim authority.
