U.S. ENVOY ACCUSES IRAN OF ALLOWING AL-QAEDA MILITANTS ESCAPE - 2002-06-15

The U-S envoy to Afghanistan has accused Iranian authorities of allowing al-Qaida and Taleban militants cross into the country and out of the reach of coalition forces.

Zalmai Khalilzad told reporters in Kabul Friday that while the elected government in Tehran has expressed support for the new Afghanistan, Iranian militants continue helping al-Qaida and the Taleban escape.

Iran has not responded to Mr. Khalilzad. But Afghan Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah said the United States has not shared such information with the new government.

Mr. Abdullah said Iran backs the war on terrorism. He said President Mohammad Khatami was the first world leader to congratulate Afghan President Hamid Karzai on his election.
