Opium Found at Afghan-Tajik Border - 2002-06-28

Russian border guards say they have found 50 kilograms of opium hidden along the Tajik-Afghan border.

The border guards say the opium came from Afghanistan and apparently was left at the border to be picked up by members of a Tajik drug-smuggling gang.

Tajik authorities and Russian border guards working with them have seized over two tons of illicit drugs -- mostly heroin -- this year as Tajikistan has become a major trafficking route for illegal drugs entering Russia and western Europe from Afghanistan.

Russia has more than 25-thousand troops in Tajikistan to help guard the border with Afghanistan against arms and drug smugglers and to block the movements of Islamic extremists.
