Karzai Plans to Send Team to Guantanamo to Check Condition of Afghans - 2002-10-31

A spokesman for Afghan President Hamid Karzai says Mr. Karzai plans to send a team to the U-S military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to check on the conditions of Afghans held there.

The spokesman said Mr. Karzai made the decision after meeting today (Wednesday) with three Afghans who were freed from the prison earlier this week.

Haji Faiz Mohammad; Haji Mohammad Sidiq; and Jon Muhammad.

He said Mr. Karzai was surprised and saddened by the advanced age of two of the men. One man, Haji Faiz Mohammad, claims to be 105 years old, while the other, Haji Mohammed Sidiq, walks with a cane and says he is 90.

Both men have denied any links to the Taleban or al-Qaida. The third man, 35-year-old Jon Mohammed, says he was forced to fight alongside the Taleban.

The spokesman did not say when the delegation will go to the U-S prison in Guantanamo Bay.
