Iran's President Mohammad Khatami has called on the United Nations to prevent further escalation of the war in Afghanistan.
In a (Sunday) telephone conversation with U-N Secretary Kofi Annan, President Khatami also called for establishment of a broad-based government in Afghanistan including all parties and groups in the country.
The Iranian News Agency (IRNA) says Mr. Khatami condemned all forms of terrorism and backed a global campaign to combat it.
He said the effort should be under the control of the United Nations, which he argued is the most suitable venue for an all-out, fundamental fight against terrorism.
