Post-Taliban Government Discussed in Peshawar - 2001-10-24

Islamic clerics, tribal leaders and Afghan exiles have gathered in the Pakistani city of Peshawar for a two day meeting to discuss a post-Taleban government in Afghanistan.

In an opening speech, religious leader and prominent Afghan exile Pir Sayed Ahmad Gailani called for a swift end to the military operations in Afghanistan and said work needs to begin as soon as possible on reconstruction of the country.

He called for the formation of a transitional government headed by former Afghan King Mohammed Zahir Shah, who lives in exile in Rome.

Mr. Gailani told the French News Agency that dissenters among the Taleban ready to work with all Afghans to rebuild the country could play a role in a post Taleban government.
