Tajikistan Offers Airfields to U.S. - 2001-11-07

Tajik President Emomali Rakhmonov has offered the United States the use of some airfields in Tajikistan for the U-S-led military campaign in neighboring Afghanistan.

The three airfields being offered are located in the cities of Kulyab, Khojand and Kurgan-Tyube.

Mr. Rakhmonov did not elaborate on how the airfields would be used -- whether it be for humanitarian flights or for U-S led bombing runs on al-Qaida terrorist targets.

However, President Rakhmonov did note that the former Soviet bases were not all equipped for immediate use.

His comments came in a joint press conference in Dushanbe with visiting Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer. While in Tajikistan, Mr. Sezer is due to meet former Afghan President Burhanuddin Rabbani to discuss the prospects of a future Afghan government. Mr. Rabbani now leads Afghanistan's opposition northern alliance.
