Turkish Court Clears Troops to Afghanistan - 2001-11-22

Turkey's highest court has cleared the way for the government to send troops to Afghanistan.

The Constitutional Court in Ankara rejected a suit by more than 100 opposition lawmakers to block the deployment, which they say is unconstitutional.

The court voted seven-to-four to uphold parliament's decision in October to give the government full authority to send troops abroad.

Turkey announced November first it would send up to 90 special forces troops to Afghanistan to fight terrorism, help distribute aid and train anti-Taleban forces as part of the U-S-led operation dubbed "Enduring Freedom."
