U-N Concern Over Human Rights in Afghanistan, U-S - 2001-12-07

The U-N human rights commissioner says the United Nations must investigate reported abuses in Afghanistan.

Commissioner Mary Robinson says the deaths last month of several hundred pro-Taleban prisoners in the Afghan town of Mazar-e-Sherif must be scrutinized. She says Afghans that have violated human rights should not be part of any future government in Afghanistan.

Mrs. Robinson expressed concern about what she described as substantial Afghan civilian deaths and injuries stemming from the U-S led military campaign against terrorism.

She also warned against what she calls "a new type of racial profiling" of Arabs and South Asians in the United States as Washington goes about rooting out terrorism.

Mrs. Robinson spoke in Geneva (Friday) ahead of Human Rights Day on Monday.
