JAPAN SENDS HELP TO EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS - 2002-03-27

Japan says it plans to send about 400-thousand dollars in emergency aid to Afghanistan to help the country recover from a devastating earthquake earlier this week.

Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi also says Japan will dispatch a survey team to Afghanistan on Thursday, to assess what other kinds of assistance might be needed.

In Beijing, Chinese Prime Minister Zhu Rongji offered his condolences to the Afghan interim government over the loss of life and devastation caused by the quake.

Mr. Zhu said he is confident that under the leadership of interim leader Hamid Karzai, the Afghan people will overcome the difficulties brought on by the disaster.
