U.S. LAW ENFORCEMENT AND MILITARY CFOOPERATE TO HUNT ALQAIDA IN PAKISTAN - 2002-07-14

The New York Times is reporting that American law enforcement agencies have been working with the U-S military in Pakistan in an effort to hunt down al-Qaida fighters who fled Afghanistan.

In its Sunday editions, the newspaper says that never before have traditionally independent military and law enforcement organizations worked so closely to share information and expertise.

The Times says the F-B-I and the U-S military are also providing local police in various Pakistani cities with information and, in rare instances, manpower to hunt down remnants of al-Qaida and Afghanistan's ousted Taleban.

A top U-S government official told the Times that the coordinated effort in Pakistan is to prevent al-Qaida from reorganizing.
