U. S. Defense Official Will Visit Afghanistan - 2002-09-24

A top U-S defense official is traveling this week to Romania, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Italy to discuss the global war on terrorism with national leaders.

Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Douglas Feith will first meet with senior government officials in Romania, including President Ion Iliescu and Prime Minister Adrian Nastase. He is expected to convey U-S government appreciation for Romania's contributions to the war on terrorism.

Mr. Feith will then lead a U-S delegation in the first meeting in five years of the U-S-Pakistan Defense Consultative Group. The meeting is designed to strengthen ties between the countries on defense matters, and include a discussion of military training and exchanges.

In Afghanistan, Mr. Feith will meet with key Afghan and U-N officials -- as well as the U-S military leaders in the region -- to discuss Afghan army training and security in the country.

Mr. Feith concludes his trip by holding talks with senior defense and foreign ministry officials in Italy on the war on terrorism and NATO.
