DALAI LAMA HELPS AFGHA REFUGEES - 2001-11-21

Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, has donated 50-thousand dollars to help Afghan refugees.

A representative of the Tibetan Buddhist leader handed a check to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Ruud Lubbers, in Geneva Wednesday. Mr. Lubbers praised the Dalai Lama, saying his compassion for the world's dispossessed is well-known.

The 66-year-old Tibetan leader has spent 42 years in exile from his homeland, having fled Tibet in a failed uprising against Chinese rule in 1959.

The U-N refugee agency is caring for more than three million Afghan refugees, mainly in Pakistan and Iran. Those people have fled two decades of war and drought in their country.
