NEW ZEALAND JOURNALIST KILLED IN TRAFFIC ACCIDENT - 2002-08-24

A New Zealand journalist working for Australian media was killed in a one-car accident late Friday in Afghanistan.

A spokesman for the international peacekeeping force in Kabul told reporters a car carrying Alistair McLeod and a Spanish journalist overturned while traveling on the highway from the capital to Jalalabad. The New Zealander's body is to be flown home on a British military plane overnight after a brief funeral service in Afghanistan.

The Spanish journalist was injured and is listed in stable condition. The French news agency has identified the Spaniard as Luis Alvarez.
