U-S Military To End Food Drops Over Afghanistan - 2001-12-14

The Pentagon says U-S planes will end their air drops of food and other supplies to Afghan civilians now that more humanitarian aid is getting into Afghanistan.

General Richard Meyers -- chairman of the U-S military's Joint Chiefs of Staff -- told reporters in Washington Thursday the increased flow of aid has made the drops "unnecessary."

General Meyers said U-S planes have dropped more than two-point-four million food packets in Afghanistan since the U-S military campaign against the Taleban and al-Qaida began October seventh.

International relief agencies say the reduction in fighting throughout the country has led to the re-opening of many transport routes, making it easier to bring in food and other needed supplies.
