Smoke rises after a house was blown up during a military operation by Egyptian security forces in Rafah near the border with southern Gaza Strip. Egypt began setting up a buffer zone along the border with the Hamas-run territory to prevent militant infiltration and arms smuggling following a wave of deadly attacks.

An unmanned rocket owned by Orbital Sciences Corporation explodes just seconds after launch from Wallops Island, Virginia, on what was to be a resupply mission to the International Space Station. "The Antares rocket suffered an accident shortly after lift-off," NASA mission control in Houston said, describing the blast as a "catastrophic anomaly."
