The U-S First Lady, Laura Bush, has condemned the Taleban's treatment of women in Afghanistan as brutal degradation.
In the weekly presidential radio address today (Saturday), Mrs. Bush said the Taleban has exercised deliberate cruelty toward Afghan women.
She said harsh repression of women is a terrorist goal. She added that people around the world have to speak out because she said this is the kind of world terrorists would impose on everyone else if they could.
Mrs. Bush said she delivered the radio address to mark the start of efforts to highlight the plight of Afghan women under the Taleban.
Other U-S activities include the release of a State Department report focusing on the pre-Taleban freedoms Afghan women enjoyed.
Cherie Blair, the wife of British Prime Minister Tony Blair, is also joining the offensive against the Taleban. She is scheduled to make a presentation, Monday or Tuesday, in London.
