Tajikistan - Drugs - 2001-08-29

Russian border guards patrolling Tajikistan's border with Afghanistan have shot and killed a drug smuggler, who they say was carrying 32 kilograms of heroin.

A spokesman for the guards said the incident occurred Tuesday night at Moskovsky border crossing.

At a different border crossing point, guards tracked two men. Although they were not able to find them, they recovered two bags containing a total of 70 kilograms of heroin.

Russian troops help Tajikistan patrol its border with Afghanistan. Tajikistan has become a major trafficking route for illegal drugs entering Russia and western Europe from Afghanistan.
