U-N officials say a bus has hit a land mine in central Afghanistan. The explosion killed 13 passengers and injured six others.
The accident took place Saturday in a resort area near the town of Bamiyan.
A U-N spokesman (David Singh) speaking in Kabul today (Sunday) said the bus driver had been warned to take a detour to avoid land mines.
As many as 10-million such mines are believed to be scattered across the Afghan countryside after more than two decades of war. Many people are killed or maimed by hidden explosives each year, despite continuing efforts to clear the mines.
